Do we need a Marketplace regulator in India?
#1
Question
Regulation goes against the open market economy. It is generally bad and breeds corruption.

Having said that, from seller side of things, almost all major marketplaces in India offer B-grade service to the sellers.

Issues vary from sub-par logistics, withholding of payments in reserve without any clear reason or definition of how much percentage would be held to outright suspension of accounts without any reason. Any requests from sellers usually fall on deaf ears and are met with templated responses without any SLA for resolution for almost all seller concerns.

A similar situation exists in US, as far as Amazon is concerned. Following link would give you a picture or how bad things can get with Amazon:

The issues mentioned in the link above can be copy-pasted to Indian marketplace scenario(specially Amazon).

India already has a regulator for telecom - TRAI, which does a pretty good job in keeping telecom companies on their feet.

As mentioned earlier, while customer service is a focus area for the marketplaces, seller services usually lag way behind - even though we as sellers at times pay through our noses in some categories to these marketplaces.

Shouldn't there be a similar agency overlooking marketplace companies operations in India, specially when so much commerce is happening electronically through these marketplaces. Would it help?

Hi, regulator is a by product of open market economy. It helps promote competition and reduces corruption, monopoly, nexus, money power, nepotism etc
Check Shermans Anti Trust Act

There are many more regulators in India, check CERC, RBI, IRDAI, SEBI, which are helping all stakeholders survive in a competitive manner

There is already a knowledgebase and change petition created by aiova, check the same .

Putting forward a few links.
Demand for Regulatory Body

All marketplaces as of now are taking advantage of sellers. They have created returns policies on behalf of sellers, that sellers will be bear the loses if even customer is doing fraud.

There no Cap on their Commission Fees and courier Charges

Deliberate Poor customer service towards Sellers

For Every stupid issue, they will refer to their stupid policies

Indian Online marketplace is in urgent need of Government Interference

In coming years , I'm quiet sure Govt will setup a new division for this and they will launch their own marketplace, but meanwhile, these Current marketplaces are going to loot and take advantage of the sellers
